About the eBook

The SEO Handbook was written as a handy reference guide for people that are new to the world of Organic Search Marketing and Search Engine Optimization. It is meant to start a foundation of understanding from which to grow from. It is not meant to be a comprehensive guide into the world of SEO, simply the first step. It began life as a handout at Reliable SEO for clients to orientate themselves in the inner workings of an organic search marketing campaign. As it grew larger, some resources were added and the SEO Handbook was born.

Since tht time more additions have been added and the 2008 edition is packaged fresh. There is nothing more dangerous thn working with outdated manuals and the SEO HandBook is updated frequently to keep you just as fresh.

 

Here’s a Snippet from the Introduction

I seek to make this some light reading that is straight forward, teaches you a few things - and hopefully creates a better understanding for you to take and build upon. The search world, as with everything else in life, is ever evolving. Make sure to never stop refreshing your knowledge base.
I also want the Handbook to be digestible. By that I mean, I want you to be able to retain information throughout the process and be able to easily review everything at anytime. For me it often seems a larger resource can create its own ‘lag’ from being to large to be fluid for the person on the go

 

It contains not only an overview of the concepts and tactics employed by professional Search Optimizers, but the sratetgic and tactical elements as well;

 

For me, as I have touched on, I always look for an ROI. There is an associated cost with attracting traffic. It it’s SEM (paid search traffic), SEO, promotional or other form of advertising, there is a price. With SEO it is often found right at the beginning. This is why the initial decisions towards WHAT terms to target, is often the difference between a strong or tweak ROI. Having a #1 on Google for a term the doesn’t ‘convert’ is nothing more than bit of bravado.. ‘Look – I’m number 1!’

So we seek the ‘money terms’; the terms that bring in the targeted traffic that has the best possible conversions. We also are looking to build an army of these rankings. We don’t want to merely rank on 1 or 2 terms. We want to corner the market for all things ‘Cancun’… we can then target products and services to the various verticals within the core market group.

 

It was decided to make a HANDBOOK and not a full featured eBOOK - actually that was the whole point of the exercise. Not to get into huge bloated offering - thus a 'handbook' format seemed appropriate. Some other handbooks on areas such as KW research, Link building, Budgeting and others seems to be a popular idea and I have received positive feedback small bite sized SEO Strategies (instead of a HUGE resource). I would be looking for these in 2008.

One of the first things I like to do is set some basic goals. Certainly when SEO is in the mix, gaining high organic rankings would likely be the call of the day. While traffic is great, targeted traffic is far better. For each targeted phrase or keyword, there is a corresponding action associated with it. If it is a sale or a sign up, there is likely a conversion metric at the other end at some point. So our initial goal would likely be promoting/marketing a product, service, event or community. We also would set a benchmark variable to establish what events quantify a successful campaign. Now we have a general goal of what we want the user to do.

Who should read the SEO Handbook 2008?

This handbook is not for the seasoned SEO veteran or internet marketing Gurus, though I hope it is thought provoking for all. If you are new to internet marketing or running websites in general, the SEO Handbook is a GREAT investment. The resources section is worth the price of admission alone. This book is written for the Search Engine Optimization Novice or intermidiate enthusiasts looking for a different angle.
